PRINCETON, N.J. – Fourth-year University of Virginia men’s tennis player Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) was chosen as the Mideast Region’s nominee for the ITA/John Van Nostrand Memorial Award, as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Wednesday (May 16). Vahaly is one of six finalists for the national award, which is a stipend awarded to an outstanding senior men’s player who is planning to pursue a professional tennis career.

Vahaly has compiled a 35-5 record in singles this season. He advanced to the finals of the singles draw at the 2000 T. Rowe Price National Clay Court Championships in September and the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American in October. Vahaly’s four-year record at Virginia is 101-28.

In doubles, Vahaly and his partner Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) are 31-7 this season and are the nation’s top-ranked doubles team. The duo advanced to the finals of the National Clay Court Championships and the ITA All-American.

Vahaly will compete in the upcoming NCAA Individual Championships in Athens, Ga. May 23-28. He will play in the singles draw and will team with Montgomery in the doubles draw.
