Virginia's Weinberg Earns Verizon District III Academic Honors

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia rising third-year softball outfielder Katie Weinberg (Reston, Va./South Lakes) has been named to the 11-member 2001 Verizon Academic All-District III University Division Softball Team. With her selection to the District III team, Weinberg is now eligible for national Verizon Academic All-America honors.

Weinberg was a starter in left and center field for the Cavaliers in 2001. She played in 60 of Virginia’s 69 games and started 53 of those contests. Weinberg had 26 hits in 137 at-bats for a .190 batting average and scored 19 runs. Weinberg was also third on the team with 13 sacrifice hits and 11 stolen bases.

Weinberg, who is majoring in psychology, was a 1999-2000 National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American Scholar Athlete in 1999-2000. She was also selected to the Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll in 1999-2000. Weinberg has been named to UVa’s Athletic Honor Roll her first three semesters. She also serves as a senior writer for the Cavalier Daily Sports Department.

The Virginia softball team concluded the 2001 season with a 52-17 overall record and a 4-4 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Cavaliers set a school record with their 52 wins.

To be nominated for the Verizon Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. No athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing in his/her career. District III consists of schools from the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.
