FORT MILL, S.C. – The University of Virginia baseball team dropped an ever-so-close 2-1 decision to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the second round of the 2001 ACC Baseball Tournament at Knights Stadium. The Demon Deacons, the #3 seed in the tournament, broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the eighth inning to pull out the one-run victory over the #7 seeded Cavaliers.

Wake Forest scored the first run of the game and took a 1-0 lead when Jason Aquilante doubled to left-center field before scoring on an RBI-sacrifice fly to right field by teammate Corey Slavik two batters later.

The Demon Deacons held on to their one-run lead until the bottom of the seventh inning when Virginia tied the score at 1-1 when Hunter Wyant hit a two out, RBI-single up the middle that scored Doug Vroman.

However, Wake Forest regained the lead in the top of the eighth inning when Cory Sullivan single to right field before scoring the game-winning run two batters later when Jamie D’Antona hit an RBI-single past UVa third baseman Jeff Kamrath to give the Demon Deacons a 2-1 lead. Wake Forest relied on its pitching and avoided a late run-threatening rally by the Cavaliers to pull out the 2-1 win.

UVa starting pitcher Brandon Creswell (7-4) took the lost despite pitching eight strong innings after giving up two runs on seven hits to go along with a team-high six strikeouts. Wake Forest’s pitching duo of Ryan Braun and Dave Bush (4-3) combined for 15 strikeouts and were instrumental in the Demon Deacons victory. Braun started on the mound for WFU and pitched six innings while allowing one run on four hits to go along with a game-high 10 strikeouts. Bush earned the win after pitching three scoreless innings and scattered two hits while striking out five batters.

With the loss, Virginia’s record falls to 25-30 overall, 1-1 in the ACC Tournament. Wake Forest improves to 39-15 overall, and remains undefeated in the ACC Tournament with a 2-0 record.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Thursday, May 18th when UVa faces the N.C. State Wolfpack in the ACC Tournament Quarterfinals. Virginia will play N.C. State at 3:30 p.m. and the contest will be played at Knights Stadium.
