ATHENS, Ga. – Fourth-year University of Virginia men’s tennis player Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) advanced to the third round in the singles draw of the 2001 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, win over Jean Simon from Texas on Friday (May 25) in Athens, Ga. Vahaly will play a third round match at the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year. He advanced to the quarterfinals in 2000.

Vahaly has now won a school-record 37 singles matches this season and has lost just five times during the 2000-01 campaign. He will play the winner of a match between Eric Scharf from St. John’s and Washington’s Matt Hanlin. The third round match will be played tomorrow (Saturday, May 26). The match time has not yet been determined.

Vahaly is due to play again this afternoon when he and doubles partner Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) begin competition in the doubles draw. The top-seeded tandem takes on Dumitru Caradima and Shuon Madden from Texas A&M today (May 25).
