Charlottesville, VA – The Cavalier defense allowed Richmond only three shots tonight and continued their shutout streak to 170:21 as the Hoos (4-1) handed the Spiders (5-1) their first loss of the season with a 2-0 win in the home opener for Virginia. Katie Slocum (Carlisle Pa./Carlisle) assisted on both goals for Virginia to help the Cavaliers win their fourth consecutive game.

Virginia jumped on board first as Mason White (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) sent a ball into the circle on a free hit. Slocum collected the ball and dribbled a couple steps before firing a shot on cage that was tipped in by Kiersten Van Hooser (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox). It was Van Hooser’s first goal of the year. The Cavaliers led at the break 1-0.

At the start of the second half, a Richmond through ball was collected and taken downfield behind the defense, but Emily White (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) came out to the top of the circle and blocked the ball away to preserve the shutout. The Cavaliers and the Spiders both continued to press, and Richmond was awarded a corner with 17:25 to play. Jessie Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) broke up the corner and started a transition that saw Rosie Walker (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) force a corner at the other end. White sent a ball out to Slocum, who set for Molly McManus (Oakton, Va./Oakton). McManus’s shot hit the back of the boards and the Cavaliers led 2-0 with 15:34 to play.

With the win the Cavaliers improve to 4-1 on the season and face the NCAA defending champion Old Dominion Monarchs on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 1:00 pm
