CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The #2 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team remained undefeated on the season after recording a 1-0 shutout victory over the William & Mary Tribe in front of 2,793 spectators at Kl?ckner Stadium this evening. UVa’s Kyle Martino (Westport, Conn.Staples) scored on a penalty kick with just 1:56 remaining to break up a scoreless tie game.

Martino’s penalty kick was set up when the Cavaliers’ Ryan Gibbs (West Chester, Pa./East) was tripped up in the box by a Tribe defender as he attacked the goal with just under two minutes to play. On the penalty kick, Martino went to the left corner of the goal with his shot and found the back of the net after William & Mary’s goalkeeper Trevor Upton went right on the block attempt. The goal was Martino’s third of the season and was his first game-winning goal of the year.

The Cavaliers’ David Comfort (Richmond, Va./Monacan) gathered one save in goal and the Virginia defense did its part in shutting down the Tribe’s offensive attack to give UVa it’s third consecutive shutout of the year.

With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 6-0-1 overall, while the loss drops William & Mary’s record to 4-3-1 on the season. The win gives UVa a 14-5-4 advantage in the all-time series history against the Tribe and breaks a two game-winning streak for W&M in the series.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Sunday, September 30th when UVa plays its first road game of the 2001 season in Raleigh, N.C. against the N.C. State Wolfpack. The contest is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. and will be played at the Method Road Soccer Stadium. William & Mary will return to home action on Saturday, September 29th when the Tribe hosts Delaware at 7:00 p.m. at Busch Field.
