#2 Virginia Men's Soccer Records Seventh Consecutive Shutout Victory With 2-0 Win Over #11 Clemson

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The #2 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team recorded its seventh consecutive shutout victory by posting a 2-0 win over the #11 Clemson Tigers in front of 3,090 spectators this evening at Kl?ckner Stadium. UVa’s Kyle Martino (Westport, Conn./Staples) scored two goals and Virginia goalkeeper David Comfort (Richmond, Va./Monacan) tallied four saves to lead the Cavaliers to a two-goal victory.
UVa jumped out to an early 1-0 lead at 27:36 when midfielder Steve Totten (Allentown, N.J./Peddie) played a long-ball ahead to a streaking Martino in the Clemson backfield. Martino outran several Tiger defenders and positioned himself between the Tigers’ goal with only Clemson goalkeeper Doug Warren to beat. Martino gathered Totten’s pass and beat Warren with a one-timer to the left corner of the goal to make it a 1-0 Virginia lead. Martino’s goal would eventually become the game-winning score. The Cavaliers took their one-goal lead into the locker room at halftime.
Leading 1-0, UVa extended its lead to 2-0 at 58:36 when Jacob LeBlanc (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) sent a pass to teammate Ryan Gibbs (West Chester, Pa./East) near the edge of the box. Gibbs then connected on a cross to Martino who fired and scored on a shot from 15 yards out to put the Cavaliers ahead by two goals.
UVa’s Comfort made several key stops in goal to earn his four saves, while the Tiger’s Warren made a game-high five saves in a losing effort.
With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 10-0-1 overall, 4-0-0 in the ACC. The loss drops Clemson’s record to 8-3-0 overall, 1-1-0 in the conference. The win gives UVa a 19-14-6 lead in the all-time series with the Tigers.
The Cavaliers will return to home action on Wednesday, October 17th when Virginia hosts the Mercer Bears. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be played at Kl?ckner Stadium. Clemson will also return to action on October 17th when they travel to Greenville, S.C. to face the Furman Paladins at 7:00 p.m.
