CHARLOTTESVILLE – The University of Virginia men’s basketball team is ranked among the top teams in the nation in several preseason rankings.

Virginia is ranked 11th by both The Sporting News and Street and Smith’s. UVa is ranked 13th by Basketball News and by Dick Vitale, and the Cavaliers are ranked 16th by Slam magazine and by ESPN.com.

UVa has four starters returning from last season’s team that compiled an overall record of 20-9 and participated in the NCAA Tournament.

Virginia has exhibition games scheduled at University Hall during the preseason practice period with the Nantucket Nectars (Nov. 2, 7:30 p.m.) and the Los Angeles Stars (Nov. 11, 2:00 p.m.) The Cavaliers open their 2001-02 regular-season schedule against Wagner College at University Hall on November 16 (7:30 p.m.).

The Virginia men’s and women’s basketball teams make their first preseason appearance on Friday (Oct. 19) at ‘Hoos in the Hall. UVa’s version of Midnight Madness is free and begins at 11:10 p.m. at University Hall. The teams are scheduled to take the court at midnight.
