Three minutes into the second half the Cavaliers forced a corner and Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) one-timed a Jessie Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) pass into the cage to put the Cavaliers up 2-0. For 69 minutes the Cavaliers (13-6) kept the Blue Devils off the boards, but in the final minute of play Duke (9-9) converted one of their 11 corners to pull within two and the Cavaliers held on for the win 3-1. Three different Cavaliers notched goals for Virginia, and Coleman chipped in two assists to lead the team into the semifinals.

Virginia got on the board first as Emily Beach (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) took possession of a loose ball on the left side of the field and slotted it up to Juli Bojanic (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield), who was immediately fouled. On the restart, Bojanic sent the ball across the field to Rosie Walker (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) who took it into the circle and fired a shot on cage. The rebound came out and Walker was able to obtain possession and slid the ball over to Katie Nicholson (Clarksburg, N.J./Allentown), who knocked the ball into the cage for a 1-0 Virginia lead with 14:22 to play in the first half. The Cavaliers led 1-0 at the break.

Just three minutes into the second half Cara Unterkofler (Centreville, Va./Centreville) took possession of the ball at the 25 and sent the ball across the circle to Goodloe, whose reverse stick sweep was popped into the air on the save, giving the Cavaliers a corner. On the corner, Katie Jo Gerfen (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) sent the ball over to Coleman, who took it down to the endline and crossed it to Goodloe, who one-timed it in, giving Virginia a 2-0 lead with 32:00 to play.

Duke took nine corners in the second half to the Cavaliers’ five, but they were unable to convert until the final minute. Virginia was able to strike again as Mason White (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) took possession of the ball deep in Virginia territory and sent the ball upfield where Coleman ran onto it. Unterkofler made the run with Coleman, and Coleman sent the ball across the circle where Unterkofler tipped the ball into the cage with 2:31 to play, putting Virginia up 3-0.

After the Blue Devils picked off an errant Virginia pass in the backfield, they forced a corner that saw Angie North hit a direct shot to get the Blue Devils on the board.

Virginia advances to the semifinals to play Maryland (15-3) on Friday, Nov. 2. The Cavaliers defeated the then-#1 Terrapins 3-2 in strokes earlier this season.
