CHARLOTTESVILLE – Cathy Bongiovi has accepted a position as an assistant media relations director in the University of Virginia Athletic Media Relations Office, effective November 14. Bongiovi, who has 14 years of experience in athletic media relations, will work with the women’s basketball, football and golf programs at Virginia.

Bongiovi spent the last four years as an assistant athletic media relations director at Penn State University, where she worked with the women’s basketball and women’s soccer teams. Prior to joining the athletic department at Penn State, Bongiovi spent two years as assistant director of communications at the Atlantic 10 Conference in Philadelphia.

After graduating from Penn State in 1987 with a degree in broadcast journalism, Bongiovi joined the public relations staff of the Philadelphia 76ers. Following her time with the 76ers, she spent one year as an athletic communications director at the University of Connecticut, before taking a position as the assistant sports information director with the University of Iowa women’s athletic department in August 1991. After two years as assistant sports information director at Iowa, Bongiovi was promoted to sports information director for the Hawkeyes’ 12 varsity women’s sports.

Bongiovi is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), and has earned 11 citations from CoSIDA for excellence in publication design. She has also been a member of the NCAA Women’s Final Four media coordination staff since 1997, and is a member of the United States Basketball Writers Association and Female Athletic Media Relations Executives (FAME).
