COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The #2 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team recorded its tenth shutout of the season after posting a 3-0 victory over the Maryland Terrapins in front of 1,673 spectators at Ludwig Field. UVa used first half goals by Ryan Gibbs (West Chester, Pa./East) and Steve Totten (Allentown, N.J./Peddie) to build a 2-0 lead at halftime before Jacob LeBlanc (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) added an insurance goal early in the second period to help the Cavaliers record a perfect 6-0-0 mark in the ACC.

The 6-0-0 conference record marks the first time in 15 years that Virginia finished undefeated in the ACC after going 6-0-0 in 1986, and the Cavaliers recorded the feat this season without being scored upon after posting six shutouts in conference play.

UVa jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Gibbs fielded a cross from LeBlanc and tucked in a shot from the right side of the box that bounced off the far post before trickling into the goal at 19:58. Gibbs’ goal, his eighth of the season, eventually became the game-winning score. Totten extended Virginia’s lead to 2-0 just over five minutes later at 25:16 when Eskandarian and Kenny Arena (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) set up his one-timer from 20 yards away. The Cavaliers took their 2-0 lead into halftime at the break.

UVa added an insurance goal just 50 seconds into the second period (45:50) when LeBlanc scored his second goal of the season. Gibbs fielded a rebounded shot off an Eskandarian shot attempt and sent a cross to LeBlanc for a goal.

The Cavaliers’ David Comfort (Richmond, Va./Monacan) gathered three saves between the pipes and posted his eighth shutout of the year.

With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 15-0-1 overall, 6-0-0 in the ACC. The loss drops Maryland’s record to 8-7-1 overall, 0-4-1 on the season. The Cavaliers are now 23-29-6 all-time in the series history.

UVa will return to home action on Friday, November 9th when Virginia hosts the James Madison Dukes in the Cavaliers’ final regular season game of the season. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be played at Klockner Stadium.
