Blue Defeats Orange in Virginia's Wrestling Exhibition, 19-12

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – In preparation for the upcoming 2001-2002 wrestling season, the University of Virginia wrestling team competed in the annual Blue & Orange wrestling exhibition tonight at Memorial Gymnasium. The Blue & Orange exhibition is an intra-squad scrimmage between current members of the UVa wrestling team. The Blue team recorded a 19-12 victory over the Orange squad by gathering victories in five of the eight matches, including wins in the first four consecutive bouts of the event.
The Blue teamed jumped out to a 15-0 lead through the first four matches and held on for a six-point victory. The Blue squad took an early 4-0 lead when John Christopher (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) recorded an 8-0 major decision over the Orange’s Reed Landry (McLean, Va./Potomac School) at 149 before Tim Foley (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) pushed the Blue squad to a 7-0 lead by posting an 8-6 decision over Don Carlo-Clauss (Rochester, N.Y.?Greece Olympia) at 157. The Blue team’s Will Durkee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) earned a 6-0 decision over the Orange squad’s Cartney Curnuck (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) at 165 to make the score 10-0 before the Blue’s Brian Muir (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) posted a 19-3 technical fall victory over the Orange’s Steve Mazzola (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edwards) at 174 to give the Blue team a 15-0 advantage.
The Orange team won three out of the last four matches including back-to-back bouts at 197 and the heavyweight class to pull within 15-6 of the Blue squad. Scott Mania (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) recorded the Orange team’s first victory by defeating Andrew DeMartino (McLean, Va./Jefferson) 3-1 at 197 to make the score 15-3 before Josh Etu (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) squeaked out a narrow 3-2 decision over Ryan Painter (Rainelle, W.V./Rainelle) in the heavyweight class to close the gap to 15-6.
The Blue’s Byron Dunlap (York, Pa./Dallastown) recorded a 9-0 major decision over Eric Hawes (Stephens City, Va./Warren County) at 125 to give the Blue team a 19-6 lead before the Orange’s Jim Hartey (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) posted a fall over Matt Viola (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) at 133 to make the final score 19-12.
In the 149 consolation match, John Christopher posted a 7-4 decision over Paul Bjorlo (Reston, Va./South Lakes). No points were awarded in the match for either team. Due to several injuries, there were also no matches held in the 133 or 184 classes.
Virginia will begin the regular season portion of its 2001-2002 schedule when the Cavaliers travel to Morgantown, W.V. to compete in the West Virginia Open on Saturday, November 10th. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
