Blacksburg, Va. – The UVa men’s tennis team completed first round play at the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Va., on Friday afternoon. Competiton resumes Saturday morning, and will go through to Sunday.

Michael Duquette and Jason Romesburg will represent the Cavaliers in the Maroon bracket. Duquette faces Hampton’s Alvero Leyrisse on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Romesburg faces off against Virginia Tech’s David Emery. Romesburg defeated Old Dominion’s Niklas Oscarsson, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 in the main draw on Friday. Duquette defeated Hampton’s Cameron Atkins, before falling to Virginia Tech’s Davor Dupljik.

Duquette teamed with Stephen Nolen, to pick up an 8-4 victory over Old Dominion’s Davis/Briggs team, setting up a Saturday match with Virginia Tech’s Dupljik/Kurz, with a time yet to be determined. One other Uva doubles team competed, Romesburg and Dillon Walker, fell 9-7 to Virginia Commonwealth’s Norin/Barnes team, the third-seeded doubles team of the tournament.

Elsewhere in singles competition, Patrick Guarnieri defeated Virginia Commonwealth’s Daniel Bermeo, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6, and advances to face William & Mary’s Zach Malmgren on Saturday at 10 a.m., in the main draw consolations.
