CHARLOTTESVILLE – University of Virginia Director of Athletics Craig Littlepage announced Friday (Nov. 30) that the Virginia-Michigan State basketball game, stopped on Wednesday (Nov. 28) because of unplayable court conditions at the Richmond Coliseum, will not be completed or replayed. The game, part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, was stopped at 15:04 of the second half because of a slippery court, with Virginia leading 31-28.

“On behalf of the University of Virginia and its department of athletics, I want to salute and thank the sellout crowd that assembled for the game on Wednesday night in Richmond,” Littlepage said. “Once again, fans from around the Commonwealth demonstrated their support for college basketball.

“The teams and coaching staffs from the two schools are to be applauded and recognized for their efforts in playing through adverse conditions. The two head coaches, Tom Izzo and Pete Gillen, deserve thanks for their professionalism in dealing with the unfortunate circumstances that resulted in the game being stopped.

“The city of Richmond is an important area for the University and for our athletics programs. We will return to Richmond for future competition and look forward to the continued support of our fans and friends. In that regard, I’m pleased that discussions between the University, the city of Richmond and the Richmond Coliseum management have already began at the highest levels. We will continue to seek a resolution of all outstanding issues.”
