UVa Wrestling Falls to #10 Missouri at Virginia Duals, 32-14

HAMPTON, Va. – The University of Virginia wrestling team dropped its opening match of the 2002 Virginia Duals to the #10 ranked Missouri Tigers by the score of 32-14 at the Hampton Coliseum. Missouri, the top-seed in the tournament, jumped out to an early 10-0 lead after two matches and won seven of the ten bouts en route to an 18-point victory. UVa’s trio of Tim Foley (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point), Jimi Massey (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) and Josh Etu (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) won their respective weight classes for the Cavaliers.

Foley recorded Virginia’s first points of the dual and cut Missouri’s lead to 10-5 when he posted a 16-0 technical fall victory over the Tigers’ Jonathan Sioredas at 157. After Missouri won back-to-back matches at 165 and 174 to extend its lead to 18-5, Massey trimmed the Tigers advantage to 18-8 after he earned an 8-3 decision over Matt Turner at 184. Two bouts later, Etu recorded Virginia’s first fall of the dual after pinning Missouri’s Kevin Herron at 5:22 into the heavyweight match.

With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 1-2 overall in dual matches, while the victory improves the Tigers’ record to 7-0 in dual match action.

Virginia will return to action at 5:00 p.m. in the Virginia Duals when it faces the Virginia Tech Hokies in the second match in the tournament for each team. Missouri will advance to the second round to face another ACC opponent, the North Carolina Tar Heels at 1:00 p.m. Both duals will be held at the Hampton Coliseum.
