Greensboro, N.C. – The Atlantic Coast Conference released its 2002 football schedule today. Virginia’s schedule features 12 regular season games, including six home contests. Starting times for all games will be announced later.

The Cavaliers are scheduled to kick off their 2002 campaign on Aug. 31 on the road against Florida State, one of eight games against teams that went to bowl games last season.

Virginia opens its home schedule the following week (Sept. 7) against the Lou Holtz-led South Carolina Gamecocks from the Southeastern Conference. This is the first meeting between the two schools since 1987.

The Cavaliers then have a bye week before facing Akron at home on Sept. 21 for the first time in school history.

Virginia also plays home games against Clemson (Oct. 12), North Carolina (Oct. 19), N.C. State (Nov. 16) and Maryland (Nov. 23).

In addition to the season opener at Florida State, the road schedule includes games at Wake Forest (Sept. 28), Duke (Oct. 5), Georgia Tech (Oct. 26), Penn State (Nov. 9) and in-state rival Virginia Tech (Nov. 30).

Virginia finished the 2001 season with a 5-7 record in Al Groh’s first year at the helm.
