Virginia Baseball Prepares For Home Opener Against Bucknell

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball team will begin the regular season portion of its 2002 schedule on Saturday, February 16th with a doubleheader against the Bucknell Bison. The Cavaliers will throw out the first pitch in the season opener for both teams at 12:00 noon in the new UVa Baseball Stadium in the first game of the doubleheader. Virginia will put the wraps on the three-game weekend series against the Bison with a single game against Bucknell on Sunday, February 17th at 1:00 p.m. The Cavaliers swept the Bison 3-0 in their last meeting back on February 26-27, 2000 in Charlottesville. Virginia defeated Bucknell 6-1, 5-4 and 13-2 in those contests.
UVa welcomes 19 returning players from last season’s squad including 10 pitchers and four starters in the field. Virginia was picked to finish eighth in the 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference Coaches’ Preseason Poll after finishing 25-31 overall, 9-15 in the conference last season.
Dennis Womack, in his 22nd season at the reigns of UVa, will look to build on his 540 overall career victories including 149 in ACC play.
