RALEIGH, N.C. – The Virginia softball team lost its opening game of gold medal bracket play at the Triangle Classic Saturday (February 16), but won its second game of the day to advance in the loser’s bracket. The Cavaliers fell to Minnesota 4-1 and then bounced back with a 6-2 victory over Robert Morris in the gold medal loser’s bracket. Virginia now stands at 3-1 on the season.

In the 4-1 loss to Minnesota, UVa grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Minnesota tied the contest in the bottom of the first and then took the lead for good with another run in the bottom of the third. First-year right fielder Val Sevilla (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) led off the game with a bunt single and then stole second base. She scored on graduate student Kelly McCabe’s (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) double to left field. McCabe had two of UVa’s three hits in the game with Sevilla accounting for the third. Fourth-year All-American Kristen Dennis (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon) took the loss on the mound as she allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out four and walking one.

Dennis gave the Cavaliers a quick 2-0 lead against Robert Morris with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning. With the two RBI, Dennis increased her career total to 104 to surpass Eileen Schmidt (1991-94) as Virginia’s all-time leader. Dennis also added a third RBI in the game with a bases loaded walk in the sixth inning. Third-year left fielder Katie Weinberg (Reston, Va./South Lakes) had two hits in the game, scored two runs and drove in a third.

Second-year starter Joanna Barstad (Canby, Ore./Canby) evened her record at 1-1 with the complete-game victory. She allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out two batters.
