Virginia Wrestling Defeats Duke, 28-11

Durham, N.C. – The University of Virginia wrestling team recorded its first Atlantic Coast Conference dual match victory of the season and its fourth overall win of the year after recording a 28-11 victory over the host Duke Blue Devils. The Cavaliers won seven of the 10 matches in the dual en route to a 17-point win.
Virginia’s Brian Muir opened the match with an 8-4 decision over Matt Hoover at 174-pounds. UVa’s Jimi Massey followed with a 9-1 major decision over the Blue Devils’ Frank Cornely at 184 to spot the Cavaliers a 7-0 advantage. Massey registered a takedown with just three seconds remaining in the third period to gain the extra point for Virginia.
Duke’s Daegan Smith got the Blue Devils to 7-3 with a decision over Andrew DeMartino at 197. The Washington, D.C. native jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the opening period and held on for an 8-5 decision.
Following a 14-5 major decision win at heavyweight by UVa’s Ryan Painter and a 6-2 decision by the Cavaliers’ Byron Dunlap at 125, Virginia took a 14-3 lead midway through the competition. UVa’s Dunlap overcame a 2-1 deficit in the third period to defeat Tommy Hoang in the 125-pounds bout.
Duke’s Stuart Holzer earned his 15 win of the season with a 14-4 major decision versus UVa’s Ryan Stewart. Virginia rebounded to post wins at 141, 149 and 157 pounds after victories by the Cavaliers’ Bob Seidel, Paul Dunstan and Tim Foley to stretch the UVa lead to 28-7 with one match remaining. Foley remained unbeaten in dual matches by improving to 12-0. In the final match, Duke’s Mike Mitchell defeated Don Carlo-Clauss by the score of 11-1 at 165.
With the victory, Virginia improves to 4-9 overall, 1-1 in the ACC. The loss drops Duke to 5-6 overall, 0-3 in the ACC. UVa will return to action on Sunday, February 17th when the Cavaliers travel to Raleigh, N.C. to face the N.C. State Wolfpack. The dual match is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
