Final Stats

Virginia’s All-American Lauren Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) notched five goals and added an assist, but it was not enough as the #7 Cavaliers fell at home to the #10 Orangewomen 12-10. Syracuse jumped out to a 2-0 lead but the Cavaliers battled back to take the lead with 20:24 to play in the game, but the Orangewomen went on a 5-2 run to close the game and notch the upset 12-10. Gina Sambus (Garden City, NY/Garden City) led the Cavaliers with four groundballs and four caused turnovers while Cary Chasney (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) scooped up five ground balls to lead all players.

The Orangewomen scored two goals in the first four minutes of the game before Aumiller fed a streaking Sambus down the arc to get the Cavaliers on the board 4:48 into the game. Chasney tied the game as she completed a fast break after Andrea Pfeiffer (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) made a save on a Syracuse shot and started a fast break with a pass to co-captain Tiffany Schummer (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s). Schummer passed it up to Morgan Thalenberg (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s), who fed Chasney. Chasney raced in from the 20 to knot the game at 2-2 5:30 into the contest.

The Orangewomen took the lead again with a Carrie Soults goal six minutes later, but Aumiller tied it up again as Sambus intercepted a Syracuse clear and got the ball to Aumiller, who rolled in the arc and notched the equalizer. The Hoos took the lead as Elizabeth Pinney (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) scooped up a ground ball and started a transition that was finished as Appelt scored with 13:02 left in the half.

From there, the Orangewomen notched three consecutive goals to take the lead 6-4 at the break.

Lauren Keller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) won the opening draw of the second half and got the ball to Appelt, who ran the ball in for the goal, pulling the Cavaliers within one just 16 seconds into the half. On the ensuing draw, Syracuse won and scored on the fast break to move back ahead by two.

Aumiller brought the Cavaliers back with a pair of goals 1:05 apart as she rolled in the arc and then turned a fast break into a goal with an assist from Appelt. Chasney gave the Cavaliers the lead after Courtney Young (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) broke a Syracuse clear and got the ball to Chasney, who was fouled in the arc. Chasney converted the free position and the Cavaliers had the lead 8-7.

Syracuse scored two goals in two minutes to retake the lead by one, but Aumiller tied the game as she flipped in a loose ball in the arc. Syracuse took the lead again less than a minute later, and then went ahead by two with 10:13 to play. Aumiller converted a shooting space foul with five minutes to play to cut the deficit to one, but the Cavaliers could not clear the ball after Schummer got control of the ball in their defensive end, and Syracuse scored as the Cavaliers pressured out with 43 seconds to play.
