TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Virginia men’s golf team stands third at the Seminole Intercollegiate after the first round on Monday at the Golden Eagle Country Club.

ACC rival North Carolina paces the field of 15 with a two-under 286. The College of Charleston is second with a 291 (+3), while Virginia follows by one stroke with a 292 (+4).

Individually, Duke’s Leif Olson shot a five-under 67 to lead the field of 77 competitors. Alabama-Birmingham’s Graeme McDowell and UNC’s Bob Cherry are tied for second with a round of 68 (-4) each. Cavalier senior Steve Marino (Fairfax, Va.), the defending Seminole medalist, is just two strokes behind the leader with a 69 (-3).

UVa sophomore Jeremy Luce (Austin, Texas) and senior Shep Nowlin (Lynchburg, Va.) are tied at No. 19 with a 74 (+2). Sophomore Kevin O’Connell (Potomac, Md.) follows by one stroke with a 75 (+3) to tie for 29th. Junior Justin Goodhue (Glastonbury, Conn.) rounds out the UVa squad with a 78 (+6) to stand 59th.

The final round of the Seminole Intercollegiate tees off on Tuesday, March 12 with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
