The University of Virginia’s first varsity eight and third varsity eight recorded victories on Saturday (March 16) as the UVa women’s rowing team opened its 2002 spring season in competition with San Diego State University at the Rivanna Reservoir.

UVa’s first varsity eight finished with a time of 6:49.54 to defeat Virginia’s second varsity eight (6:52.94) and San Diego State’s varsity eight (7:24.27).

In the other race, the Cavaliers’ third varsity eight finished with a time of 7:03.96 to defeat UVa’s first novice eight (7:07.09) and San Diego State’s novice eight (7:34.26).

Virginia’s first varsity eight was comprised of coxswain Sarah Brennan, Amanda Kennedy, Jen Reck, Madeline Engel, Mary Dobmeier, Meg Van Dam, Molly Baker, Lauren Mitterer and Carolyn McMillan.

UVa’s second varsity eight included coxswain Lauren Richards, Kelley Dougherty, Tammy Clark, Jenny Sherman, Jessica Busch, Hayley Nunn, Claudia Durkin, Risa Mandzuk and Emily Richard.

The Cavaliers’ third varsity eight was comprised of coxswain Betty Shumaker, Andrea Czarkowski, Kelley Jesnig, Katie Spearman, Julie McQueen, Christine Chambers, Dawn Placek, Genevieve Cauchon-Voyer and Leah Harley.

Virginia’s first novice eight included coxswain Anne Farland, Katie Falcigno, Parrish Bergquist, Jessie Haury, Beth Clark, Jenn Furstenau, Margaret Matia, Lindsay Shoop and Katie Yrazabal.

The UVa women’s rowing team returns to action at the Rivanna Reservoir on Saturday, March 23, when the Cavaliers host Duke University. The regatta is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
