Golf Moves up to 12th After Second Day at Furman Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The University of Virginia men’s golf team moved up to 12th place after the second round of the 33rd Annual Furman Intercollegiate on Saturday.
Host Furman and Coastal Carolina lead the field of 24 squads with a 583 (+7) each. Defending champion Virginia Tech, which carded 285 on the day to move from sixth into third with a 584 (+8), is now one stroke off the lead. After 36 holes, five teams are within 10 strokes of the leading team pace.
The Cavaliers, who fired a 298, are tied for 12th with Memphis with a 607 (+31).
Individually, Virginia Tech’s Brendon De Jonge stands in first place with a four-under 140. Five players are tied with a two-under 142.
UVa sophomore Jeremy Luce (Austin, Texas) shot a 73 on the day for a 149 (+5) to tie for 26th overall. Junior Justin Goodhue (Glastonbury, Conn.) stands 46th with a 152 (+8). Senior Steve Marino (Fairfax, Va.) and sophomore Kevin O’Connell (Potomac, Md.) follow by one stroke with a 153 (+9) to tie at 53rd. Junior Thomas Lee (Guttenburg, N.J.) shot a 159 (+15). Playing as an individual, sophomore Eli Barnes (Bristol, COnn.) fired a 162 (+18).
Final round action tees off at 8 a.m. on Sunday, March 24 at the Furman University Golf Course.
