GREENVILLE, S.C. – The University of Virginia men’s golf team shot a 295 in the final round to finish ninth at the 33rd Annual Furman Intercollegiate on Sunday.

The 19th-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies captured their second straight Furman title with a 868 (+4) after carding a tourney-best 284 over the final 18 holes. Host Furman and Coastal Carolina tied for second with a 872 (+8) each.

The Cavaliers, who stood 12th after the second round, jumped up to ninth with a 902 (+38).

Individually, Tech’s Brendon De Jonge took home medalist honors with a five-under 211.

UVa junior Justin Goodhue (Glastonbury, Conn.) shot a 71 in the final round to tie for 24th with a 223 (+7). Senior Steve Marino (Fairfax, Va.), who also had a 71 in the last round, followed by one stroke to finish 33rd with a 224 (+8). Sophomore Jeremy Luce (Austin, Texas) tied for 39th with a 225 (+9). Sophomore Kevin O’Connell (Potomac, Md.) finished with a 230 (+14), while junior Thomas Lee (Guttenburg, N.J.) shot a 237 (+21). Playing as an individual, sophomore Eli Barnes (Bristol, COnn.) fired a 236 (+20).

Virginia’s “B” Team will participate in the George Washington Invitational on March 31-April 1 in La Plata, Md. The Cavaliers return to varsity action on April 12-13 at the Wofford Invitational.
