Dawn Cleary broke her own school record in the steeplechase en route to winning the title in that event at the Raleigh Relays today, held on the campus of N. C. State University. Cleary’s time of 10:25.49 nipped her own record set last year by .31 seconds and also qualified her provisionally for the NCAA Championships. Her teammate Melanie Matthews also qualified provisionally as she took second in the event, nine seconds behind Cleary. Virginia also medalled in the 100m dash as Kiamesha Otey took second and two of the women’s relay teams finished in the top three as the 4×800 team took second and the 4x1500m team finished third.
Virginia’s Eliese Mitchell took 8th in the hammer throw with a toss of 51.84m, and Vika Osipenko was also 8th, taking that place in the pole vault. The two short relays both finished in the top five as the 4x200m team was fourth and the 4×100 team took fifth.
On the men’s side, Jarrett Hagwood finished seventh in the 110 high hurdles with a run of 14.21, bettering his top time from 2001. Walton Kingsbery finished eighth in the 1500m run with a time of 3:52.06, and JD Murdock also finished 8th, tossing the javelin 60.21m. The men’s 400-meter relay took third in a time of 40.88.
