Virginia co-captains Gina Sambus (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and Tiffany Schummer (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) both caused four turnovers to lead the Cavaliers while Molly Cangemi (Timonium, Md./Annapolis) scored five goals and added an assist. Cangemi’s first goal, which came 11:46 into the game, gave Virginia a 3-1 lead and was Cangemi’s 100th career point, making her just the 23rd person in school history to notch 100 career points. Virginia rallied after the Dukes scored the first goal to notch six consecutive scores, including two each from Cangemi and Amy Appelt (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) while Sambus and Lauren Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) added a goal and an assist each in the run. Andrea Pfeiffer (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) had 12 saves in the victory while allowing just seven goals.

The Cavaliers won the opening draw and Cangemi got off the game’s first shot, but it was saved by JMU’s Altig. In the Dukes’ offensive end, Kristen Dinisio had the first goal of the game as she drove to the crease from the left and scored just 1:56 into the game. The Dukes won the next draw but Schummer caused a turnover and scooped up the loose ball and sent it to Elizabeth Pinney (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) who brought the ball into the Virginia offensive end. There the Cavaliers got the ball to Appelt who rolled the crease and scored 7:57 into the game to tie the contest at 1-1. Virginia then went on a four-goal run in 2:21 as Cangemi had a pair of goals and Sambus and Aumiller assisted each other, giving the Cavaliers a lead they would not relinquish.

Pfeiffer made a save and Aumiller picked up a loose ball in the arc and the Cavaliers went on a transition where Aumiller found Sambus in the arc and Sambus converted to give Virginia the lead for good. Pinney won the next draw and the Cavaliers got the ball to Cangemi who cut to the crease to notch her milestone goal 11:46 into the contest. Cangemi scored the next goal just 32 seconds later after Cary Chasney (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) won the draw and Virginia found Cangemi, who took the ball in from the top of the arc. Pinney won her second draw and fed Sambus right away, who fed Aumiller in the arc. Aumiller scored 24 seconds after Cangemi, giving the Cavaliers a 5-1 lead 12:42 into the game and forcing the Dukes to take a timeout. Virginia’s Amy Appelt closed out the 6-0 run as she rolled in the fan for an unassisted goal four minutes later, putting the Cavaliers on top 6-1 with 13:40 to play in the half.

JMU answered with a pair of goals just under a minute apart as McNevin Molloy drove to the cage from the right and Lisa Staedt ran it in 57 seconds later, pulling the Dukes within three at 6-3 with 11:18 to play in the half. Virginia responded as Sambus controlled the next draw and the Cavaliers went to the 8-meter mark after Chasney drew a foul. Chasney converted, putting the Cavaliers up by four at 7-3 with 10:07 to play in the half. Schummer started the Hoos’ next goal as she knocked down a JMU pass and ran the ball downfield where the Cavaliers reset and Cangemi dumped the ball into Morgan Thalenberg (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) in the arc. Thalenberg’s goal with just over a minute remaining gave Virginia an 8-3 lead, but the Dukes got a late goal from Dinisio, who converted a feed from Molloy, to go into halftime down 8-4.

Cangemi drew a shooting space foul a minute into the second half and ran the ball in, scoring 1:33 into the second half to give Virginia a 9-4 lead. A pair of Dukes goals in 65 seconds pulled JMU back within three with 19 minutes to play. Ashlee Dardine scored as she grubbed a loose ball after a couple Dukes shots were saved by Pfeiffer, and just over a minute later Molloy tried feeding Jessica Brownridge in the arc, but the ball glanced off Brownridge’s stick and ended up in the cage, scoring the Dukes’ sixth goal.

Pinney picked up an errant JMU overthrow by the Cavalier defensive restraining line and in the Virginia offensive end Appelt drew a shooting space foul that she converted, putting the Hoos in double digits with goals for the eleventh consecutive game this year. Sambus’s pickup of a JMU turnover led to the next goal as she fed Pinney in transition. Pinney brought the ball downfield where she fed Aumiller, who flipped the ball to Cangemi who scored with 14 minutes to play. Staedt scored on a drive from the top to stop the Virginia run, but Virginia scored the final four goals of the game to close out the win.

Aumiller won the draw after Staedt’s goal and she got the ball to Chasney at the top of the fan. Chasney ran the ball in to score the Cavaliers’ twelfth goal. Chasney scored again just over a minute later as she quicksticked a Banks feed from behind into the cage. The Cavaliers had taken possession after Courtney Muller (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown) picked up a JMU bobbled ball in the Cavalier defensive third and started a transition in which the Cavaliers found Banks for the setup. Aumiller scored the next goal as Virginia won the next draw and Aumiller shot and grabbed the rebound which came high off the keeper’s stick and stuffed the ball back into the net 34 seconds after Chasney did. The Dukes got possession and got off a shot, but Pfeiffer made the save and Virginia brought the ball to the other end where Cangemi ran the ball to the crease and scored with 1:23 to play for the final score of 15-7.

The Cavaliers travel to Duke to face the sixth-ranked Blue Devils on Saturday, April 6. Virginia is 2-0 in the ACC and can claim the ACC regular season crown with a win over Duke.
