1971 marks the beginning for Lannigan Field. For six decades, the Virginia track team used Lambeth field for its track facilities. It was not until the efforts of two former track students, Ed Hardy and Vincent Derr, was the new track constructed. They started a committee, headed by Bernard Chamberlain, Robert Gooch and Pete Delaney, to find funds for the facility. Their endeavor was bolstered by a contribution from the Department of Athletics.

Lannigan Field remains a premier track facility, which boasts nine lanes, a water jump for the steeple chase, tarten covering, and stadium lights for the spring 2002 season.
