Cavaliers Win Second In A Row, Defeat Maryland 4-3

College Park, Md. – The UVa Men’s Tennis team picked up its second consecutive ACC win, defeating Maryland on Tuesday afternoon by a score of 4-3. The Cavaliers improve to 11-9 overall on the season, and are 2-5 in conference matches.

Just as they did in their win over N.C. State, the Cavaliers clinched the doubles point, which made the difference. Brian Boland went with the same exact doubles lineup that helped earn a win over the Wolfpack. UVa took two out of the three doubles matches to win the point, as Jonathan Chou and Michael Duquette defeated Haris Causevic and John Murcheson at No. 1 doubles, 8-6. It’s the first win in doubles for the team of Chou and Duquette, in just their second match as a team this season.

Gregg Alpert and Stephen Nolen clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 win over Greg Chambers and Chris Chiu at No. 3 doubles. Alpert and Nolen are 3-0 this year, and have clinched the doubles point in two consecutive matches.

Chou’s win in singles at No. 5 clinched the match for the Cavaliers, as he blanked Chambers, 6-0, 6-0. Chou has won three matches in a row, and ten overall on the season.

Nolen and Jason Romesburg won the other two singles matches for the Cavaliers. Nolen defeated Chiu at No. 2 singles for his 19th win of the year, 6-1, 6-0. Romesburg defeated Murcheson at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-4. Nolen and Romesburg are tied for the team lead in victories with 19 apiece, while Romesburg has a team-best three wins in conference matches.

The Cavaliers are down to their final two regular season matches. This Thursday, they travel to Blacksburg to take on Virginia Tech at 2 p.m., before returning home on Sunday to face North Carolina at 1 p.m.
