CHARLOTTESVILLE – The University of Virginia women’s rowing team is scheduled to compete in the George Washington Invitational Crew Classic on the Potomac River race course on Saturday (April 13). The event is part of the 2002 National Cherry Blossom Festival and is the largest collegiate rowing competition in the Washington metropolitan area.

Virginia won the women’s varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and novice eight races at last year’s George Washington University Invitational Crew Classic.

Preliminary heats begin at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday followed by the finals scheduled to begin at 1:20 p.m. The 2,000-meter, four-lane buoyed course begins near the Spout Run area of the Potomac River with the finish line at Washington Harbour in Georgetown. An awards ceremony will follow the competition at approximately 5:00 p.m. at Washington Harbour.

UVa’s first varsity eight dropped from sixth to 12th in the nation in this week’s USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll. Virginia finished sixth in the grand final of the first varsity eight at the San Diego Crew Classic last Sunday (April 7) in San Diego, Calif.
