Virginia's Mason and Watson Named To VaSID's All-State First Team

RICHMOND – Roger Mason, Jr., and Travis Watson of the University of Virginia are first-team selections to the 2002 Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID) University Division All-State Men’s Basketball Team. The team was selected in voting by members of the association.
Other members of the first team are Tommy Adams of Hampton University, Jason Conley of Virginia Military Institute and Domonic Jones of Virginia Commonwealth University. Conley was selected the state’s University Division Player of the Year and Steve Merfeld of Hampton University was named the Coach of the Year.
Mason, a 6-5 junior guard from Silver Spring, Md., led the Cavaliers in scoring (18.6 ppg.), assists (4.1 apg.), free throw percentage (133-151, 88.1 percent), field goals made (162) and three-point field goals made (81) during the 2001-02 season. He ranked second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in free throw percentage and third in scoring.
Watson, a 6-8 junior forward/center from Brookneal, Va., led the ACC in four statistical categories in 2001-02. He led the ACC in rebounding (272, 9.7 rpg.), double-doubles (17), offensive rebounds (3.43 pg.) and defensive rebounds (6.29 pg.). Watson, who averaged 14.1 points a game, also ranked fourth in the conference in field goal percentage (149-284, 52.5 percent) and tied for tenth in blocked shots (26, 0.93 pg.).
Mason and Watson were both second-team All-ACC selections this past season, were selected to the 2001-02 United States Basketball Writers Association All-District 3 Team and were first-team All-State selections by the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Mason was a first-team selection to the 2002 National Association of Basketball Coaches Division I All-District 5 team and Watson was a second-team selection. Mason was also among the Top 50 Preseason Candidates and the Top 30 Midseason Candidates for the 2001-02 Wooden Player of the Year Award and All-America Team.
Virginia senior forward Chris Williams was an honorable mention selection to the 2002 VaSID All-State Team.
