CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – Virginia honored its players at the 19th Annual Women’s Basketball Awards Banquet on Tuesday evening at the Omni Hotel.

Earning the team’s coveted Cavalier of the Year was senior Telisha Quarles (Louisa, Va.). The 5-8, All-ACC guard was also honored with the Best Offensive Player and Preseason Conditioning Awards.

Rookie of the Year accolades went to freshman Brandi Teamer (Joliet, Ill.). A 6-0 forward, the Gballmag.com National Freshman of the Year was recognized as the team’s top rebounder.

Best Defensive Player was awarded to sophomore Anna Crosswhite (Castlecrag, Australia). The 6-1 forward also captured the Bob Williams Award for her athletic and academic performances and was awared the Alumni Scholarship for next season. The sophomore was recognized for leading the team in free throw shooting. Crosswhite shared the Leadership Award with senior Kathy Allen (Green Lane, Pa.).

Walk-on senior Karen Jaeger (Midlothian, Va.) was named the team’s Unsung Hero and MVP in Practice. Freshman Lynette O’Reggio (Laurel, Md.) and junior Liz Sahin (Hatay, Turkey) shared the Most Improved Player Award.

Freshman guard LaTonya Blue (Baltimore, Md.) was recognized for leading the team in assists.

Junior guard Safiya Grant (Bronx, N.Y.) received the Thomas J. Ryan Scholarship for next season.

Receiving the Coach’s Award for outstanding contributions to the team were Kevin Nichols, Carol Callahan, Myron Ripley, and Paul (the team’s busdriver).

Virginia finished the 2001-02 campaign at 17-13 overall, third in the ACC standings. The Cavaliers made their 19th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
