Virginia Rowers Sweep Four Races From Boston University

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The University of Virginia women’s rowing team swept four races from Boston University during a regatta at the Rivanna Reservoir on Saturday (April 27). Virginia won the first varsity eight, the second varsity eight, the first varsity four and the first novice eight races.
UVa’s first varsity eight, ranked 11th in the nation, finished with a time of 6:37.3 to defeat 20th-ranked Boston University (6:39.9). Virginia’s first varsity eight was comprised of Lauren Richards (coxswain), Catelyn Coyle, Madeline Engel, Jen Reck, Lauren Mitterer, Molly Baker, Meg Van Dam, Carolyn McMillan and Amanda Kennedy.
The Cavaliers’ second varsity eight had a time of 6:39.2 to defeat the Terriers (6:48.0). UVa’s second varsity eight was made up of Betty Shumaker (coxswain), Hayley Nunn, Tammy Clark, Kelley Dougherty, Julie McQueen, Mary Dobmeier, Jessica Busch, Genevieve Cauchon-Voyer and Emily Richard.
Virginia’s first varsity four finished with a time of 7:34.1 to defeat Boston University’s first varsity four (7:48.6). UVa’s second varsity four finished third in the race with a time of 7:50.1. The Cavaliers’ first varsity four was comprised of Sarah Brennan (coxswain), Katie Yrazabal, Claudia Durkin, Kelley Jesnig and Risa Mandzuk. UVa’s second varsity four was made up of Ellen Birek (coxswain), Katie Spearman, Dawn Placek, Andrea Czarkowski and Leah Harley.
The Cavaliers’ first novice eight had a time of 7:03.5 to defeat the Terriers (7:09.7). Virginia’s second novice eight finished third with a time of 7:21.4. Virginia’s first novice eight was comprised of Anne Farland (coxswain), Christine Chambers, Parrish Bergquist, Debbie Miller, Jessie Haury, Beth Clark, Lindsay Shoop, Margaret Matia and Katie Falcigno. UVa’s second novice eight was made up of Launa Forehand (coxswain), Abby Lynch, Mia Woods, Callie Spencer, Jennifer Furstenau, Carroll Chancellor, Hannah Kaska, Jess Martin and Christina Wong.
Virginia’s novice fours raced each other on Saturday with the first novice four winning with a time of 7:43.9 followed by the second novice four (8:00.4) and the third novice four (8:02.1). The Cavaliers’ first novice four was comprised of Anne Farland (coxswain), Jessie Haury, Debbie Miller, Beth Clark and Parrish Bergquist. UVa’s second novice four was made up of Launa Forehand (coxswain), Abby Lynch, Mia Woods, Margaret Matia and Jennifer Furstenau. Virginia’s third varsity four was comprised of Sarah Tuke (coxswain), Laura Cole, Christina Wong, Carroll Chancellor and Nikki Woodhouse.
The Virginia women’s rowing team’s next competition is on May 12 when the Cavaliers compete in the Eastern Sprints in Camden, N.J.
