Johnson City, Tenn. – UVa’s Stephen Nolen and Warren Knapp captured championships in singles and doubles at the 13th annual Little Caesar’s ETSU Tennis Championships held this week in Johnson City, Tenn. The event is part of the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit.

“Going into the tournament, I felt pretty good,” Nolen said. “I wasn’t expecting to win the tournament, but I knew how I’m capable of playing. I took one match at a time and got some good experience from the matches I competed in.”

Nolen defeated North Carolina’s Jonathan Janda, 6-2, 6-0, for the singles championship. He teamed with Knapp to defeat Will Glenn and Chris McDonald, 8-2, for the doubles championship. Glenn is a junior at the University of Georgia. McDonald was a first-team All-SEC selection in doubles at Florida this past season. He was ranked as high as No. 14 in doubles, winning 25 doubles matches with Hamid Mirzadeh.

Nolen tied for the team-lead in singles victories with 21 in his freshman season and was 8-5 at No. 1 doubles with Michael Duquette. He and Duquette knocked off the No. 43 doubles team from Wake and the No. 17 team from Duke in consecutive matches back in March. He won five of seven matches towards the end of the season with Gregg Alpert at No. 3 doubles. His four wins in ACC doubles matches led the team. Knapp was 3-1 in singles this past season.
