BALTIMORE – Jennifer Tuchband, who competed at No. 2 singles this past season for the UVa women’s tennis team, has advanced to the main draw of the USTA $10,000 Challenger event in Baltimore, Md.

Tuchband defeated Tennessee’s Agnes Wiski, 6-2, 7-5, Stanford’s Lauren Barnikow, 6-1, 6-1, and Illinois’ Kate Boomershine, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3, on her way to the main draw, which starts tomorrow. Wiski finished her senior season at Tennessee with a record of 30-12. Barnikow was an All-American at No. 3 singles this past season and a crucial component to the Cardinal’s two national championships over the last two seasons. She finished the 2001-02 season ranked No. 20 in the nation.

Tuchband finished her junior season with 11 wins and was ranked as high as No. 78 in the nation. She moved up to compete at No. 1 singles for two matches in February, upsetting the No. 40 (Kavitha Krwhnamarthy, Princeton) and No. 24 (Alice Pirsu, Penn) players in the nation in consecutive matches.
