Virginia Baseball Signs Daniel Tanner in Late Signing Period

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia head baseball coach Dennis Womack has announced that Daniel Tanner (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) has signed a National Letter of Intent and will attend UVa and play baseball for the Cavaliers. Tanner, Virginia’s only baseball signee in the late signing period, will enroll at UVa for the 2002-2003 academic year and will be eligible to compete for the Cavaliers during the 2003 baseball season. The signing of Tanner brings Virginia’s recruiting total to five student-athletes for next season.

Tanner, a 6-3 right-handed pitcher, earned four letters in baseball for coach Jim Thacker at Jefferson Forest High School. At Jefferson Forest, he was named a two-time Seminole District Player of the Year, a two-time All-Area Player of the Year, a two-time All-Timesland Player of the Year and a two-time All-Region Player of the Year selection.

As a senior, Tanner was named First Team All-State and was selected as the Hall of Fame Player of the Year, the Bedford Rotary Baseball Player of the Year and the Jefferson Forest Male Athlete of the Year. He was also named to the Virginia High School League All-Star Team. As a junior, Tanner was tabbed a Second Team All-State choice and was an All-District, All-Region, All-Area and All-Timesland First Team selection. He also established the school-record for strikeouts in a single season at Jefferson Forest. During his sophomore year, Tanner was named First Team All-District, Second Team All-Area and was picked as an Honorable Mention All-Region player.

Tanner joins current UVa recruits: Matthew Avery (McLean, Va./Landon Prep), Michael Ballard (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes), Matthew Dunn (Jasper, Ga./Pickens County) and Ryan Zimmerman (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) on the Cavaliers’ recruiting list. The quartet of Avery, Ballard, Dunn and Zimmerman signed a NLI with Virginia in the early signing period.
