Five Cavaliers Named to USA Lacrosse Squads

University of Virginia rising fourth-year Lauren Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) was named to the USA Women’s Lacrosse Elite Squad today, joining current squad members Bonnie Rosen, Cherie Greer, and Kara Cooke. These three, along with USA and UVA assistant coach Heather Dow, were all a part of the USA World Cup team that won the 2001 World Championship held in England. Current Virginia head field hockey coach Jess Wilk is also a member of the USA Elite team. Gina Sambus (Garden City, NY/Garden City) was named to the USA Developmental Squad.
Aumiller, a first-team All-American who was a member of the USA Developmental Squad in 2001-02, makes her first appearance on the Elite team this year. In 1999 she was the captain of the USA Under-19 team that won the World Championships. Named the midfielder of the year by insidelacrosse.com, Aumiller already ranks third all-time at Virginia in scoring and in 2002 led the nation in scoring, scoring 83 goals.
Cherie Greer (’94) won her third world title in 2001 and in the process picked up her second consecutive Player of the Match in the gold medal game. Greer was also the inaugural recipient of the Wes Paterson award, recognizing excellence in play and sportsmanship and awarded at the World Championships. The IWLCA National Defender of the Year in 1994, Greer led the nation in scoring from her d-wing position and won two NCAA titles with the Cavaliers in 1991 and 1993. Greer was named to the USLacrosse Team of the Century in 2001.
Bonnie Rosen (’92) won her second world title in 2001 and has served on the US Lacrosse Board of Directors and the US Lacrosse Women’s Division Board of Governors. A 1992 NCAA Champion with the Cavaliers, Rosen serves as the Chair of the Athletes’ Council.
Kara (Ariza) Cooke (’98) won her first world title in 2001. The MVP of the ACC Lacrosse Tournament in 1998, Ariza helped catapult the Hoos to the 1998 ACC title and their first #1 ranking since 1994.
Heather Dow (’82) was a keeper on the 1986 and 1989 USA World Cup teams that won the silver and gold, respectively, in the IFWLA World Championships. In 1990 she was named an assistant coach on the USA Elite Team and has helped guide the Stars and Stripes to three consecutive world titles, winning in 1993, 1997 and 2001. She was named to the US Lacrosse Team of the Century in 2001 and in 2002 will be inducted into National Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
Gina Sambus was a member of the USA Developmental Team in 2001-02 and a captain of the UVA lacrosse team in 2002. An All-ACC selection in 2002, Sambus ranks in the top 10 in school history in ground balls and caused turnovers.
