GREENSBORO, N.C – The Virginia women’s basketball team will appear in at least eight televised game during the 2002-03 season, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced on Monday.

The Cavaliers, which finished last season at 17-13 with a 19th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, will play twice in nationally televised games on ESPN2. The first clash is at Georgia Tech on Feb. 16, while UVa will host North Carolina in its home finale on March 2 on the network.

Virginia will also appear in six games televised by the Regional Sports Network (Comcast Sports Net, Fox Sports Net South, Sunshine Network) as part of the ACC Game of the Week package.

“The schedule will be a challenge, because it’s going to be very difficult,” said Virginia head coach Debbie Ryan. “But I think we will be ready for that challenge. We are going to be very young again, but all the experience we’ve had is going to make us stronger to play a tough early season schedule and have us ready for the ACC season.”

UVa opens the 2002-03 campaign at intrastate rival Old Dominion on Nov. 22. Other non-conference opponents include St. Joseph’s (Pa.), Liberty, Long Island, Virginia Tech, Rutgers, Furman, Ohio State, and Georgetown. Over the holidays, the Cavaliers will participate in Florida’s State Farm Classic with Massachusetts and Michigan. The tourney bracket and game times have not been determined.

On January 2, Virginia opens ACC play at Clemson. The 26th Annual ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament tips off March 7-10 at the Greensboro (N.C.) Coliseum.

The 2003 NCAA Tournament, which has predetermined first and second round sites for the first time in the tourney’s history, begins on March 22. The Final Four will be held April 6 & 8 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

All tip times are subject to change.

Fans can get a preview of the 2003 Cavaliers as the team will play two exhibition contests. UVa will host exhibition games on Nov 7 and Nov. 14. Both games tip at 7:30 p.m. at University Hall.2002-03 Virginia
