AUSTIN, Texas – The Virginia volleyball team notched its first victory of the season with a 3-0 (30-18, 30-11, 30-17) triumph over Texas-Pan American at Gregory Gymnasium in the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational. UVa improves to 1-2 on the season, while the Lady Broncs fall to 0-3. With their 1-2 record, the Cavaliers finished third in the four-team tournament. UVa second-year setter Lily Phillips (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon) was selected to the All-Tournament team.

Second-year outside hitter Celeste Laborde (New Orleans, La./Academy of the Sacred Heart) led the Cavaliers to the win with a career-high 12 kills with no errors for a .600 hitting percentage. Laborde also added six digs and a pair of blocks. Third-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) also had 12 kills and nearly posted a double-double with nine digs. She also recorded three blocks and two service aces. Phillips recorded UVa’s first double-double of the season with 33 assists and 11 digs. Third-year libero Whitney Ashcraft (Yorktown, Ind./Burris) topped the Cavaliers in digs with 12, while fourth-year middle Simona Kuipers (Bow Island, Alberta, Canada/Senator Gershaw) posted a match-high seven blocks to go along with five kills and five digs. Fourth-year rightside hitter Kiersten Kaufman (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) chalked up a match-high four service aces and added five kills and four digs.

Winker Cruz led Texas-Pan American with seven kills and five digs. Cathi Netemeyer and Jena Rae Rosales both recorded 10 digs.

The Cavaliers hit a season-high .257 in the match, including a .406 mark in the second game. UVa held a 44-22 edge in kills as well as a 58-40 advantage in digs. The Cavaliers also posted nine team blocks to the Lady Broncs’ three.

Virginia returns to action on Tuesday, September 3 when it opens the home portion of its schedule with a 7:00 p.m. match against James Madison in University Hall.
