CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team will open the home portion of its 2002 schedule Tuesday night (September 3) against in-state rival James Madison. The match will be played at University Hall beginning at 7:00 p.m.

UVa, under the direction of eighth-year head coach Melissa Aldrich Shelton, stands at 1-2 on the year. The Cavaliers opened the 2002 season by competing in the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational August 30-31, in Austin, Texas. After dropping 3-0 matches to San Diego and Texas, UVa defeated Texas-Pan American 3-0 to finish third in the tournament. Virginia second-year setter Lily Phillips (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon) was selected to the All-Tournament team.

James Madison also enters Tuesday night’s match with a 1-2 record after opening the season last weekend at the Marriott Sunset Showcase in Irvine, Calif. Virginia leads the all-time series against the Dukes 18-15, including a come-from-behind 3-2 victory in last season’s finale for both teams.

After Tuesday night’s match, the Cavaliers will host the College of Charleston, Georgetown and William & Mary Friday and Saturday, September 6-7 in the Fairfield Inn Jefferson Cup Volleyball Tournament. The tournament will be played at University Hall.
