Cavaliers Shut Out Northwestern 1-0
Sept. 6, 2002
Evanston, Ill – Virginia goalkeeper Emily White (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) saved a Northwestern penalty stroke nine minutes into the game. Fourteen minutes later Katie Slocum (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) tipped a Kelli Hill (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) shot on a short corner into the cage, giving the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead they would not relinquish as Virginia defeated Northwestern 1-0 today in Evanston. With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 2-0 while Northwestern falls to 1-2.
The Hoos were whistled for a hard tackle in the circle nine minutes into the contest and the Wildcats were awarded a penalty stroke. White was up to the task and stopped the shot that went glove side high, keeping NU off the board.
Fourteen minutes later Sara York (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) took the ball at an angle to the upper left corner and was fouled, giving the Hoos a short corner. On the play, Cara Unterkofler (Centreville, Va./Centreville) sent the ball to Emily Beach (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), who set for Hill. Hill sent the ball to the cage and Slocum inserted her stick and tipped the ball over the Cats’ keeper to the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
In the second half the Cavaliers denied NU on four short corners and White made three saves to preserve the shutout.
Virginia returns to action on Sunday as they take on the Bears of Southwest Missouri on the campus of Northwestern. Game time is 1:00 CT.
