The excitement for the University of Virginia football season is now expanding beyond the field and into the stands. ‘Hoos fans have more opportunities than ever to walk away with prizes. Several sponsors for Virginia football have put together unique opportunities for each game to get the fans involved and excited about the season. Why not participate and possibly walk away with cash? Registration can be done in the comfort of your own home and is available to every student and fan.

Two of the contests for this 2002 football season can be accessed by visiting the official website for Virginia athletics, In its second season, the “Grab a Grand” contest put on by Team Virginia, which includes several sponsors such as Hardee’s, Wachovia, State Farm and the Virginia Lottery, allows the opportunity to win up to $1,000. Anyone can register on the website and one lucky fan will be chosen to participate at each home game. Each winning fan will receive two tickets to that home games and three chances to catch a punt. If one punt is caught the contestant will receive $500, if two are caught, they will win $750, and if all three are caught, the winner will receive $1,000.

Making a new appearance for 2002 is the “Dash for Cash” from Merchant’s Tire and Auto Centers. Fans can register online and win an easy $20,000 with one click of your mouse. Mac McDonald will announce the winning contestant prior to the kick return. One lucky fan will have the opportunity to win the $20,000 prize if a Cavalier player returns the opening kickoff (in either half) for a touchdown. It’s been known to happen! Advance Auto Parts is sponsoring a luxury suite package for one lucky fan and 23 of their friends. Register to win at any of the 125 participating Advance Auto Parts locations across Virginia. This package includes a 24 person luxury box for the Virginia vs. Maryland game on November 23, including full food and beverage service throughout the game. Also included in the package are four parking passes along with licensed merchandise for all 24 fans.

Lastly, if you are not chosen for any of the above contests there is still a chance to win several prizes and opportunities of a lifetime. In showing your support for the ‘Hoos you may get to experience football like never before. The “Fan of the Game” is chosen at each home football game. This fan is chosen based on Cavalier spirit, appearing festive in orange and blue for their gameday gear, and is found inspiring their entire section with their energetic support of ‘Hoos football. Head coach Al Groh says to call this fan a “true Cavalier Crazy.” One fan will be chosen at each Virginia home game this season and will be honored at the following home game. This lucky “Fan of the Game” receives a team jersey, the opportunity to be on the field for pre-game warm-ups, join the team in the locker room before the game and run out with the team through the tunnel.
