Men's Tennis Opens Season at William & Mary Tournament

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia Men’s Tennis Team kicked off the 2002 season with play at the 2002 Homewood Suites Fall Tribe Classic. The three-day event continues runs through Sunday at the Busch Tennis Courts in Williamsburg.
First year Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) had a strong debut as he won his first two collegiate singles matches in the No. 1 and No. 2 flights. Fellow first year Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) also went undefeated in singles to begin his collegiate career, taking straight set wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 flights. Also victorious in singles play for the Cavaliers were Michael Duquette (Flight 2), Chris Gonyer (Flight 4), Nick Meythaler (Flight 4), and Stephen Rozek (Flight 6).
In doubles play, Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) and Rizza recorded the Cavaliers’ only doubles win of the day, a hard-fought 9-8 win over a team from William & Mary.
The Cavaliers, along with the host Tribe, Minnesota and Notre Dame will continue play at the event at 9:00 a.m. Saturday.
