The Atlantic Coast 50th Anniversary Men’s Indoor Track Team was announced today by Commissioner John Swofford. The team was voted on by the nine league institutions as decided by the league’s 50th Anniversary Committee. The University of Virginia placed four athletes on the team including gold medalist Paul Ereng, two time ACC indoor champion Keith Witherspoon, two time All-American Greg Canty, and three time All-American Ray Brown.

Virginia’s honorees on the ACC 50th Anniversary Men’s Indoor team:

Paul Ereng (1988-89)Four time All-American (800m (I,O) 1988, 1989)…ACC Champion in the 800m (O) in both 1988 and 1989 and the 800m (I) in 1989…National Champion in the 800m (O) (1988), 800m (I) (1989), 800m (O) (1989)…Holds UVA Indoor records in the 500m (1:02.44, 1988), 800m (1:44.84, 1988), and the 4x400m (3:12.55, 1989)…Holds outdoor records in the 800m (1:43.16, 1989) and the 4x400m (3:07.14,1988).

Keith Witherspoon (1973-76)Named All-American in the Triple Jump (I)(1976)…Two time ACC Indoor Champion in the Triple Jump (1975, 1976)…Two time ACC Outdoor Champion in the Triple Jump (1975, 1976)…UVA Indoor and Outdoor record holder (I)16.16m (1976), (O)16.27m (1976)

Greg Canty (1977-80)Two time All-American in 1977 and 1978 in the 1,000 yard run…Three time ACC Outdoor Champion in the 800m (1978,1979,1980), and four time ACC Indoor Champion in the 1,000 yard run (1977-1980)

Ray Brown (1981-1984)Two time ACC champion…Three time all-American…ACC champion in the 800m for 83-84 seasons.
