Box Score

The University of Virginia’s Cara Unterkofler (Centreville, Va./Centerville) broke up a Carolina penalty corner in the 58th minute and started a fast break that was finished as Katie Phillips (Fort Worth, Texas/Trinity Valley) scored her first career goal and gave UVa a 1-0 lead, but it was not enough as the Heels scored the final three goals of the game to win 3-1.

The teams played to a scoreless first half as Virginia withstood nine Carolina short corners and Emily White (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) turned away seven of the Heels’ ten first half shots.

In the second half the Cavaliers took the first short corner but were unable to convert it. Carolina then got a pair of penalty corners but were turned away both times. Finally, on the fourth short corner of the half for the Heels, Unterkofler flew out of the cage and tapped the ball away from the Carolina battery and dribbled upfield where she fed Sara York (Watertown, Mass./Watertown). York passed the ball up to Rosie Walker (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady), who sent it back to York, who took the ball into the circle. The Carolina keeper came out to play York, but York sent the ball across the D to Phillips, who slammed the ball into the back of the boards for the 1-0 lead with 12:02 to play in the contest.

Carolina, however, came right back and scored three goals in a four minute span. The first came on a scramble in front of the cage, and the game-winner came off a short corner just over a minute later. The Heels scored the third goal on another corner with 3:15 to play in regulation.

Virginia’s White made 11 saves in the game, her fifth consecutive game with 10 or more saves.

The Cavaliers return to action on Friday as they face the Berkeley Golden Bears. Game time at University Hall Turf Field is 6:00.
