NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – William and Mary’s men’s soccer team upset 18th-ranked Virginia, 1-0, this evening in a neutral-site match at Christopher Newport’s Captain’s Field. It was UVA’s (3-4) fourth-straight loss this season, as the Tribe (3-4) held the Cavaliers scoreless for the first time this year.

Senior midfielder Ralph Bean (Devonshire, Bermuda) headed a pass to senior forward Carlos Garcia (Cali, Colombia) who beat the goalkeeper with a shot into the left side of the net in the game’s 17th minute for the only goal of the match.

The game was kept exciting in the second half, as each team had chances to score. Virginia’s best opportunity came with 22 minutes remaining, as a W&M foul gave the Cavaliers a direct kick straight on to the goal, however, the shot went harmlessly wide. The Tribe attack, led by Garcia and redshirt freshman forward Andreas Nydal (McLean, VA), forced UVA goalkeeper David Comfort to make three saves on a total of five shots in the final 12 minutes of the match.

Virginia outshot the Tribe, 14-12, in the contest and held a four to two advantage in corner kicks. Garcia had a game-high five shots, moving him into second place all-time at W&M with 271 in his career. His 38th career goal is tied for the third-best mark in school history and also gives him 100 points on his career, just the sixth person in the history of the College to accomplish the feat.

W&M senior goalkeeper Trevor Upton (Richmond, VA) made six saves in the match as he earned his first shutout of the season, while Comfort stopped a total of seven shots. Upton’s seventh-career shutout is tied for the fifth-most in Tribe history.
