CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team will open the Atlantic Coast Conference portion of its 2002 schedule with a pair of home matches this weekend. The Cavaliers will host Clemson on Friday (September 27) at 7:00 p.m. at University Hall and 25th-ranked Georgia Tech Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m.

UVa, under the direction of eighth-year head coach Melissa Aldrich Shelton, stands at 6-9 on the year. The Cavaliers are coming off a third-place finish at the Dayton Flyer Classic, which was held September 20-21, in Dayton, Ohio. UVa fell to both Dayton and Western Kentucky 3-1 before defeating IUPUI 3-1. Third-year libero Whitney Ashcraft (Yorktown, Ind./Burris), who is currently ranked 25th among Division I players in digs per game with an average of 4.28, was named to the Dayton Flyer Classic All-Tournament Team.

Clemson enters Friday’s match with a 9-6 record and is riding a five-match winning streak. Georgia Tech entered the national rankings this week at 25th in the USAToday/AVCA Top 25 Poll. Georgia Tech is 14-2 on the season and plays at Maryland prior to Saturday’s match against the Cavaliers.

Admission to all home Virginia volleyball matches is free to the public and for Friday’s match against Clemson all Cavalier Kid’s Club members are invited to come greet the team as they run out onto the court. A number of promotions are planned for this first ACC match and fans can win T-shirts, gift certificates, and many other prizes.
