Cavalier Women Finish 7th at Great American Cross Country Festival

Virginia’s Jane Maxwell led the #26 women’s cross country team to a seventh-place finish at the Great American Cross Country Festival tonight in Charlotte as she finished 22nd overall with a time of 19:08. Teammates Ashley Seaton and Kara Scanlin were close behind, finishing at 19:12 and 19:13.8, respectively as the Cavaliers defeated four teams ranked ahead of them, including #8 Duke. The Cavaliers finished just ten points in back of #2 Georgetown and were just 36 points behind Columbia, who took second place overall. Virginia also finished ahead of #11 Northern Arizona, #15 William & Mary, and #17 Colorado State.
On the men’s side, the men’s B team placed all five runners in the top 12 scorers and defeated the B team from Duke by a score of 32-54. Michael Lyng was the top finisher for the squad, coming in the 8K race in a time of 28:28.1. Teammate Matt Gutridge was just behind time with a time of 28:31.4.
The men’s A team finished 10th overall, just nipping Bucknell 306-324. The Bison had garnered votes in the Mondo Cross Country rankings last week. The top six teams in today’s meet were all ranked in the top-25 while a seventh was also listed as receiving votes. Matt Ruhl led the Cavalier contingent with a 23rd-place finish, coming in at 27:12.5.
