Cavaliers Fall to Duke 4-2

The University of Virginia scored the final two goals of the game but it was not enough as they fell to the Duke Blue Devils 4-2 today in Durham. The Cavaliers had the edge in short corners (6-5) but were unable to battle all the way back from a four-goal deficit and fell to 9-9 and 0-4 in the ACC. Virginia’s Kelli Hill (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) forced a corner that led to the Cavaliers’ first goal and then sent a through ball up to Katie Slocum (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) that resulted in Virginia’s second goal. Emily White (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) made nine saves, giving her 168 for the year.
The Cavaliers drew an early corner but it was Duke who connected on the short corner first as Gracie Sorbello’s direct shot put the Blue Devils on the board in the 8th minute. Six minutes later Johanna Bischof scored an unassisted goal to give Duke a 2-0 lead. With time winding down in the first half, Bischof scored again on a breakaway, giving Duke a 3-0 lead at the break.
Five minutes into the second half Katie Grant knocked in her own rebound, putting the Blue Devils up 4-0 with 30 minutes to play in regulation.
Hill intercepted a Duke pass and drew a Duke foul at the top of the circle. On the free hit the Virginia offense drew a short corner. Shannon LaVigne (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) shot the ball and the save popped out to the right of the cage. Cara Unterkofler (Centreville, Va./Centreville) collected the rebound and put it in the back of the cage, putting Virginia on the board in the 58th minute.
Ten minutes later Hill sent a through ball up to Slocum, who took the ball into the circle and scored, cutting the deficit to 4-2 with three minutes to play.
Virginia closes out the regular season tomorrow as they take on the #2 Michigan Wolverines in Durham. The Cavaliers will return to Durham next Thursday to take on the Blue Devils again, this time in the first round of the ACC Tournament.
