The University of Virginia women’s cross country team moved up five spots in the latest Mondo National Cross Country Poll, earning a #11 ranking, the highest for the squad since the title years of 1981-82. In 2002 the Cavaliers have a pair of seventh-place finishes at the Great American Cross Country Festival and the Pre-NCAA meet. In both races, the Cavaliers upset teams in the top-ten. At the ACC Championships last week, Virginia finished in third behind #4 Wake Forest and #6 NC State, who tied for the team title. First year Kara Scanlin was the first Cavalier across the line, coming across in 7th place, while Jane Maxwell also earned all-ACC honors with her 10th place finish. Virginia is also led by fourth-year NCAA track qualifiers Dawn Cleary and Melanie Matthews, both of whom competed at the NCAA Championships in 2002.
