Darryl Blackstock Named Defensive Freshman of the Year

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia freshman Darryl Blackstock (Newport News, Va.) was named the Collegefootballnews.com’s Defensive Freshman of the Year, the website announced on Wednesday.
Joining Blackstock on the All-Freshman First-team were tight end Heath Miller (Swords Creek, Va.) and tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson (Freeport, N.Y.).
Blackstock, an Honorable Mention All-ACC honoree, also earned First-team Freshman All-America honors and Freshman of the Year accolades by The Sporting News. The linebacker has 103 tackles and leads the Cavaliers with 13 tackles for loss and 10 solo quarterback sacks. He earned ACC Defensive Back of the Week honors following UVa’s game against Clemson (Oct. 14) and received the Bill Dudley Award as UVa?s most outstanding first-year player (team award).
Miller, a Second-team All-ACC honoree, was also named to the First-team Freshman All-America Teamand the ACC All-Freshman Team by The Sporting News. He started all 13 games and leads the Cavs with nine touchdowns, a school record for tight ends.
Ferguson was also named to the First-team Freshman All-America Team and ACC All-Freshman Teamby The Sporting News. He started all 13 games at left tackle and became the first true freshman offensive lineman in school history to start the season opener.
Virginia (8-5, 6-2 ACC) will face West Virginia (9-3, 6-1 Big East) in the Continental Tire Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 28 at 11 a.m. at Ericsson Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.
